MADISIN, Wis. – The assassin of a retired county judge in New Lisbon five days ago died himself in a hospital where he had been kept alive mechanically. Douglas Uhde, 56, shot his brains out after killing Judge John Roemer. Uhde had been declared brain-dead at a Madison hospital the day after the shooting. He was removed from support systems Tuesday morning, the state Justice Department confirmed.. He had been kept alive so his organs could be recovered for transplantation.

Long rap list

As best as investigators have figured out, Ujde was self-styled militia member who acted alone, a so-called “lone wolf,” in killing Judge Roemer. Uhde had a life largely been in prison. In 2005 he was sentenced by Roemer for burglary while in possession of a short-barreled shotgun or rifle. Uhde had a later conviction for a prison break in which he stole a car.
