TWO HARBORS, Minn. — The Lake County Sheriff’s Office will allow people back into cabins and homes in areas that had been closed due to wildfires. Property owner will receive two passes to show at checkpoints , one at the intersection of highways 11 and 2 and the other at the intersection of highways 1 and 2, said Sheriff Carey Johnson. The reopened areas include the Boundary Waters, Crooked Lake, Dunka River Road, Greenwood Lake, Sand Lake, Slate Lake areas. Johnson urged caution in areas along Highway 2 where fire crews continued to work. To people re-entering the area, the sheriff said: “At times, it is likely to be smoky and visibility possibly reduced, so please be extra cautious and watch out for the fire crews.” Also, he said, home and cabin owners need to be prepared to evacuate again if conditions change.
Forests reopening
The Superior National Forest will begin lifting camping restrictions outside of fire zone. The Forest Service announced that the west side of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness will reopen Saturday. Fire restrictions remain in place. No open flames. No campfires.
