ROCHESTER, Minn. — In an unexpected move, the Mayo Clinic’s governing trustees voted to end Gianrico Farrugia’s term as president and chief executive. The trustees offered no explanation. The announcement said Farrugia will remain in office through the end of the year to facilitate a transition to new leadership. Farrugia, age 68, a native of the island Malta, is a 30-year Mayo veteran. A year ago the trustees gave him a 15% raise to $4.3 million. Farrugia had been in charge of Mayo since 2019 on a 10-rear contract. His tenure has included navigating the global CoVid pandemic and accelerating Mayo’s main operation in Rochester as a major research institution and as a global medical destination.
