SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Mayor Paul TenHaken called on the governor to issue a shelter-in-place order for Sioux Falls, where he said a local coronavirus epidemic threatens to overwhelm the health system. Gov. Kristi Noem, a Republican, is among only a handful of state governors who haven’t seen a need to encourage people to stay home. Sioux Falls has 76.88 positive cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people — one of the highest rates in the nation. In Minnehaha County, were Sioux Falls is located, 654 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed. The number is growing exponentially, TenHaken said.
