ST.PAUL, Minn. – A foreign traveler brought monkeypox home to Minnesota — the first casein the state. The state Health Department said the infection, in the Twin Cities, was confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. There have been 201 cases reported in 26 states and 4,100 in 47 countries.

Jan Malcolm, state health commissioner: “While the threat of monkeypox generally remains low, it’s important that everyone be aware of this disease so that those at risk can seek medical care and get tested promptly.”

Monkeypox profile

A zoonotic virus causes the disease. Cases may be severe, especially in children, pregnant women and people with weak immune systems.  Symptoms, which don’t always show, include fever and muscle aches, then swollen glands  with blisters that crust over.
