NEW YORK – The often-whacky pnline site Mental Floss says the most popular Thanksgiving dish in Minnesota is green bean casserole. The site counted Google searches from Minnesota for Thanksgiving recipes. There are countless variations on green bean casserole. You can’t go wrong.  Usual recipe:

Green bean casserole. In  Minnesota households that are suspect of French cuisine, the preferred word is “hot dish.” “Casserole” is from the early 1700s French word “caseae” for a spoon-like container, which is from Latin “cattia” for ladle, which is from Greek “kuathion” for cup. Now you know.

Ingredients

> One can (10-1/2 ounces) of condensed mushroom soup.

> One-half cup milk.

> One teaspoon soy sauce.

> One-quarter teaspoon salt.

> One-quarter teaspoon pepper.

> Two cans (14-1.2 ounces each)of green beans.

> One can of french fried onions.

Steps

> Heat oven to 350 degrees.

> In 1-1/2 quart oven-proof casserole dish, stir  soup, milk, beans soy sauce, salt, pepper and and 2/3 cup of French fried inions.

> Bake 25 minutes.

> Stir and sprinkle remaining onions on top.

> Bake five minutes more.

> How about cream of asparagus soup instead?

> Or cream of chicken soup?

> Consider fresh green beans but be sure to blanch them first.

> Some folks like Worchester sauce instead of soy.
