St. Paul, Minn. — State Senator Carla Nelson, R-Rochester, has introduced a bill to prohibit governors from using executive orders to close schools or alter school schedules. These decisions should be left to local school districts, Nelson said. Although Nelson’s bill is cast in broad terms, Governor Tim Walz, a Democrat, has been a continuing Republican target for using his executive authority to curtail Co-Vid-breeding congregate gatherings. About schools, Nelson said one size doesn’t fit all. “Our 300 school districts and 100 charter schools are diverse in every way. Each district has unique needs and circumstances,” she said. “The decision on how and when to reopen should not be made from the governor’s office.”
