OSHKOSH, Wis. – The billboard battle against U.S. Senator Ron Johnson outside Oshkosh, his hometown, took a new tack. This new message accuses Johnson of racism for remarks that Black Lives Matter protests over the summer were more a threat than the J6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. The billboard was updated from a treason theme a month ago by Tom Nelson, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for Johnson’s Senate seat. Said Nelson: “It is outrageous that Senator Johnson continues to embarrass Wisconsin with his lies and deception about what happened on January 6, his role in inciting the insurrection, and the continued racist comparisons to BLM protestors.” Both men are white. Johnson, a Trump Republican, has been vulnerable for comments that there was no violence on the Senate side of the Capitol January 6 — a false assertion. It was on the Senate side that Vice President Pence and senators were evacuated as the mob came within a door of breaching the Senate chamber and calling for Pence to be hanged. Are Nelson’s Oshkosh billboards having an effect? “We’ve raised enough to continue for another week,” said Nelson. “We are happy the senator is being held accountable every time he drives back to his lakefront mansion.

Calling senator to account. New billboard faults Johnson for a false claim that there was no threat to senators’ safety in J6 Capitol riot and ransacking.
