DULUTH, Minn. – After a day of surfing the Lake Superior shoreline in a wetsuit, Darby Voeks was ready to pack his board and head home to the Twin Cities. A woman rushed up. Her dog had jumped into the ship channel at Park Point. Her friend then had gone into the cold water to save the dog. Help, she said. Still in his wetsuit, Voeks ran 50 feet, swam out to the man and dog, and brought them to shore. Other than being cold, shaken up and shivering, both man and dog were fine. This was Wednesday. Now Voeks has been nominated to receive the Duluth Citizen Partnership Prize for heroism.

Heroism at Aerial Bridge. A good albeit cold day for surfing for Darby Voeks. Not so for drowning. Image: Duluth Police Department
