WINONA, Minn. – The mother and 8-year-old brother of Winona State University senior Ella Roberts were caught in a sniper’s fire in the Independence Day parade in the north Chicago suburb Highland Park. Her brother, Cooper Roberts, was airlifted to a Chicago hospital with a severed spine. After several emergency surgeries, he remained in critical condition . The mother, Keeley Roberts, 45, a school principal, was struck by at least one bullet but less seriously hurt.  She was expected to recover. The family had driven 30 miles from Antioch, on the Illinois-Wisconsin border, for the Highland Park parade. It was not believed that 22-year-old Ella Roberts, the Winona State student, was with the family. The sniper, who has since been arrested, sliced into the crowd with 70 rounds from a military-grade Smith & Wesson M&P 15 semiautomatic rifle.
