ST. PAUL, Minn. – A federal judge sentenced ex-cop Derek Chauvin of Minneapolis to 21 years in prison for violating George Floyd’s civil rights. Said Judge Paul Magnuson: “I really don’t know why you did what you did. To put your knee on a person’s neck until they expired is simply wrong, and it is offensive.” Magnuson’s sentence, however, was at the low end of the 20 to 25 years called for in a plea agreement. The new sentence is in addition to an earlier 22-1/2-year sentence on state criminal charges of murder and manslaughter. The terms will be served concurrently. Through his attorney, Chauvin expressed remorse.
