WINONA, Minn. – The president of the Minnesota State faculty union said campus safety demands clearly stated restrictions on guns. Jenna Chernega cited the shooting this week of a faculty member at the University of Arizona. It make sense, Chernega said, for campuses to post guns-not-allowed signs, which now is not allowed in Minnesota — even though private businesses can. She said her Inter-Faculty Organization lobbied the 2022 Legislature to close a loophole that restricts seven Minn State universities and 30 colleges from posting signs that many private businesses post: “No Guns Allowed on These Premises.” The union’s bill did not receive a hearing in the Senate. “But, Chernega said, “We intend to push this bill again in 2023.”
