WINONA, Minn. –Remember when high school fun was seeing how many teens could squeeze into a phone booth? Or inside a VW bug? Times change. No more phone booths. Volkswagen has added convertibles to its Bug lineup. Even so, Winona High Schoolers had the spirit of yore in assembling for their homecoming parade. The football team rode atop two firetrucks from school to the field. The homecoming royalty, with friends, lots of them, stacked into a Volkswagen, albeit now a convertible and not quite so crammed as in the 1960s. The Winhawks won 22-0 over Faribault.

What kid never wanted to do this. The Winona and Goodview fire departments assigned two trucks, as red was the get, to carry the football team to Paul Giel Field. Such a grand entrance.

Clustered well-wishers. Families and friends huddle along the six-block parade route on aperfect fall evening. The parade was running late.
