BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. —Protesters gathered, many with home-made signs, at the site where 20-year-old Daunte Wright was shot and killed by police Sunday. The gathering, comprising whites and blacks, evolved into a two-mile march to the Brooklyn Center police building with anger and frustration swelling. At the police station the crowed milled. Some projectiles were hurled at officers in riot gear in front of the building. Police declared an unlawful assembly and ordered the crowd to disperse, then fired tear gas and flash-bang grenades to clear protesters. People in apartment buildings across from the police station, including children, watched from windows as police deployed the crowd-dispersal munitions. There was vandalism and looting at the Shingle Creek Crossing strip-mall shopping center and nearby stores. In Minneapolis too there was sporadic looting and property damage.
