WINONA, Minn. – James R. Nascak, 70, of Winona, a machinist at winch manufacturer Thern, died at home. Among his winches were those for the New Year’s celebration at Times Square in New York. He once attended the celebration. He was a supervisor at Thern. He was a gold panner and belonged to the Gold Prospectors Association of America. When he was born, his birth was announced at a Winona Chiefs game because his father, local clothier Emil Nascak, was playing for the chiefs. He thought that was so cool.
