RED WING, Minn. – A Red Wing man, John Charles Roberts, 20, was sentenced to three years prison for shooting another man in the neck in May 2019. Roberts had pleaded guilty to second-degree assault, which had been bargained down from six counts, including attempted murder. The victim, John Paul Smith, 19, of Rochester, had been sitting in a car. Smith was taken to a Rochester hospital, but the wound was not serious – a hole the size of a pencil. Smith, who didn’t have trouble breathing, told police that he had let two other men out of the car at a house at 1910 Twin Bluff Road on the South End, and that they went inside. Fifteen minutes later, Smith said, he poked his head out of the car window, heard a gunshot, and realized he had been shot.
