WINONA, Minn. – A 100-mph police chase ended as they often do. The pursued vehicle was stopped by a strip of spikes thrown into its path by a second police unit. Arrested was a St. Paul man who, his tires punctured, climbed out and gave up. The chase began in Houston County around 7:30 p.m. and continued north on Highway 61. Winona city police were waiting with a stop strip. Why did the driver flee? Maybe it was the drugs talking through his gas pedal. Police took him to jail and began paperwork for a charge of driving under the influence of a controlled substance to be filed as soon as a lab finishes with a blood sample.
