WINONA, Minn. – Landscape artist Jon Erickson, who prefers painting outdoors, not in a studio, has an exhibit through January 16 at the Winona Historical Museum. Erickson calls it “Land and Sky,” which demonstrates the eye for lighting for which he’s noted. The opening reception: Tuesday 4 to 6 p.m. Erickson, of LaCrosse, is an electrician by trade but took up an easel as a sideline in 2005 to capture scenes that inspired him. After 18 months, he sought to study under Joe Paquet of the Minnesota River School, who inspired his future work. Now Erickson drives the country with a portable easel, a stack of canvases, and a backpack. “I’m looking for interesting shapes, light, shadow, and drama,” he says.
