MINNEAPOLIS — The Target retail chain will be close on Thanksgiving this year to avoid the usual throngs of shoppers scrambling for deeply discounted gift items, which would make social distancing impossible. Instead, the company said, it will roll out its biggest deals in October. Target’s decision followed an announcement by Target and other retailers to abandon their usual pre-Black Friday jumpstart for holiday sales push. Said Target chief executive Brian Cornell: “This year more than ever, a joyful holiday will be inseparable from a safe one, and we’re continuing to adjust our plans to deliver ease, value and the joy of the season in a way that only Target can.” The chain’s 1,800 U.S. stores include a Winona outlet.
