WINONA, Minn. – Called to a domestic disturbance, police found Anthony Whiteside Jr., 35, outside yelling and plainly agitated. It turned out that there had been a horrific battle in the kitchen. Police finally subdued and arrested Whiteside but not without major resistance – and then they learned what had been going on. From the officers’ reconstructed account of what happened before they arrived: An angry Whiteside had pinned the woman of the house against a refrigerator and balled his fists as if to strike her. The woman’s 16-year-old son intervened to pull Whiteside off. Both fell to the floor. Whiteside hit his head on a table. Although bleeding, he threw the teenager to the floor multiple times and punched him in the face with closed fists. The family dog plunged protectively into the melee, biting Whiteside and drawing more blood.
Whiteside. Charges: Domestic assault, assaulting police, obstructing the legal process, disorderly conduct, violating a no-contact court order.
Struggle beyond the kitchen
According to the police report: When they arrived, Whiteside was uncooperative. He wouldn’t give his name or explain what had happened. He went after the officers. He threw his body around as tyey tried restrain him. At one point Whiteside stopped actively resisting, going limp and pinning his dead body weight on the officers. Eventually the officers got Whiteside to the squad car. He kicked his feet into the grill and, although restrained, tried climbing up the hood with his feet. Officers grabbed his feet, but he wrapped his legs around the officers kicking. Finally the officers dragged him inside the car. Next an ambulance crew deemed Whiteside’s injuries superficial — yes, the dog bite too. He went to jail. The incident had begun with a 911 call at 4:28 p.m. Whiteside was booked at the jail at 5:38. There were five counts, four stemming from the incident, one for violating a court order not go near the woman who was attacked in her kitchen. The incident itself was in the 250 block of Franklin Street.
