BLOOMINGTON, Minn.— Sightings of a bear in this Minneapolis suburb are the latest in southern Minnesota. There also have been reports of a bear wandering around Northfield and Cannon Falls. All could be the same bear. Bears easily can make a few miles a day as they wander from trash can to trash can for grub. Bears are not common in southern Minnesota, although they show up occasionally. Usually they are a smaller male — a loner that has been run out of the North Woods  by an alpha male.

Trash forager. Minnesota bears are a small black subspecies. Some young adult males weigh only 125 pounds, although hey can be as much as 500.
