CLEAR LAKE, Iowa — The Color the Wind Kite Festival on Clear Lake has been cancelled. Blame our February warm spell. The six-acre lake’s ice is too thin for safety. As a Plan B, organizers considered the nearby Mason City airport, an open 300 acres, but the Federal Aviation Administration, concerned about airplanes getting caught up in kites and strings and crashing, and said no.

Not this year. Maybe next the kites will be back at the lake. Tentative date: 2027 on February 20.
