ALMA, Wis. – A woman carrying her fishing gear across railroad tracks to get to the Mississippi River was struck by a train and killed. She was Linda Sanden, 70, of Albert Lea, Minnesota. Police said Sanders died on impact. The accident happened in the 300 block of South Main Street, downstream from Lock and Dam No. 4. Police said that Sanden and a family member crossed in front of a Chicago-bound Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight. The engineer sounded a horn but it was too late, police said. Trains typically move 40 mph through Alma. The accident happened about 12:30 p.m. The tracks and a narrow grassway separate Main Street and the river by. With temperatures in the low 90s, many people were on the riverbank fishing.
