MADISON, Wis. — A University of Wisconsin regents committee approved employee furloughs systemwide to meet an unexpected $170 million budget shortfall created by the coronavirus this semester. System President Ray Cross had asked permission for the furloughs. Furlough plans can be developed at individual campuses, including UW-LaCrosse, but must be cleared by Cross. Furloughs can run no more than three months. Many furloughed employees will be eligible for unemployment aid, Cross said.
