INGER, Minn. — Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan will drop bait in Cut Foot Sioux Lake on Saturday to mark the opening of Minnesota fishing season. The lake, which adjoins Lake Winnibigoshish, is on the Ojibwe’s Leech Lake Reservation.
A week late
The fishing opener in Minnesota usually is Mother’s Day weekend. This year’s it’s a week late because state law specifies that it occur two weeks before Memorial Day weekend. There has been an opening day ceremony for 75 years. An estimated half a million anglers are expected to be fishing over the weekend.
