ST. PAUL, Minn. – Governor Tim Walz proposed a solution to monthly special sessions of the Legislature that have been required to give him 30-day increments of authority for emergency executive orders. Walz suggested modifying the law to forgo legislative consent for specified emergencies like CoVid. The existing 30-day cap has become annoying for everybody during the CoVid crisis. There have been seven special sessions in a row. Walz characterized his proposal as a common sense way to give legislators specific control for obvious emergencies without reconvening every 30 days — but still precluding sweeping executive powers to a renegade governor who might go too far.
Verbatim
Walz to legislators: “With a light now at the end of the tunnel, I encourage you to begin the work of enacting into law the core provisions of the emergency response that have been keeping Minnesotans safe.”
