BROCKWAY, Wis. – Divers pulled a man from 17 feet of water in Wazee Lake. He was airlifted to a hospital in hopes he could be saved. Jackson County Sheriff Duane Waldera did not release the man’s name immediately but said was 25 years old and from 40 miles away in Arcadia. Divers reportedly found the victim 25 feet from shore.

At 355 feet, Lake Wazee is the deepest lake in Wisconsin. Originally the lake was a taconite quarry. When the mine was in operation, pumps sucked 800 gallons of water per minute from the quarry.vMining ended in 1983, and the quarry filled with water. Now part of a county park, the lake is popular with scuba divers for its especially clear water.
