CAMPBELL, Wis. – Police hunted for a man who led police on a 100 mph chase at French Island before crashing through a chain-link fence to drive onto Interstate 90 and escape. Police said the driver was Tommy Lavelle Martin, 29, of Dodge, Wisconsin. The chase, which started about 10:30 a.m., was harrowing, as described by police:
> A Holmen police officer attempted to pull Martin over on Highway 53 after another driver reported erratic driving.
> Martin fled in a white 2003 Acura, traveling over 100 mph on Highway. 53 and onto I-90.
> The pursuing officer ended the pursuit for safety concerns but stayed behind him to monitor Martin’s direction.
> Martin got ofI-90 on French Island and was spotted by Campbell police.
> Campbell, Holmen and Onalaska police and the State Patrol pursued Martin through Campbell.
> Martin came close to hitting a Holmen officer who was putting out spike strips.
> Martin nearly hit two police vehicles head-on.
> Martin crashed through the fence next to Sky Harbour Drive near the baseball field and International Furniture, then through a second fence to get back on I-90.
> Pursuing officers lost sight of him and ended the pursuit.
> The white Acura was found unoccupied in La Crosse three hours later.
