DETROIT – The Italian automaker FCA, which owns Jeep, is open to dropping the brand name Cherokee from two lines of best-selling vehicles, as requested by the Cherokee Nation, the magazine Car & Driver reported. The Cherokee line has been around for Jeep SUVs since 1974 when the brand was owned by American Motors. The principal chief of the Cherokees, Chuck Hoskin Jr., said that having the tribe’s name “plastered on the side of a car” does not honor them, even if it comes from a well-intended place.

Verbatim

Hoskin: “The best way to honor us is to learn about our sovereign government, our role in this country, our history, culture, and language and have meaningful dialogue with federally recognized tribes on cultural appropriateness.”
