WINONA, Minn. – For the first time since becoming a seven-day-a-week morning newspaper in 1981, the Winona Daily News will miss a day. New publisher Sean Burke, who works out of the paper’s regional headquarters in La Crosse, Wisconsin, explained that his staff deserved Christmas Eve off. Also, there will be cost-savings. The paper’s main revenue source, advertising, has been slipping. Circulation has fallen to less than 9,500.
