WINONA, Minn. – The Chicago-bound Empire Builder, pulled by a pair of 4,000-hp Genesis P42 locomotives, carried a consist of eight cars through Winona Saturday on one of its last daily trips. In peak season the train has as many as 19 sleepers, coaches, diners and lounge cars. Because of ridership declines blamed on the coronavirus pandemic, the daily service turns thrice-weekly October 1.
