MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers has a message for President Donald Trump: Better not. Trump had added Milwaukee to a list of what he describes as crime-ridden and anarchist-ridden cities to which he would send federal agents with batons and tear gas to straighten things out in a hurry. Trump already has deployed his agents to Portland, Oregon, where confrontations with protestors have escalated since Trump agents arrived. In a letter to Trump, Evers said: “As we have seen in Portland, this excessive and unwelcome federal law enforcement presence only makes these situations more volatile and dangerous.” Wisconsin authorities, including the state’s National Guard, can handle protests, Evers said. Cities besides Milwaukee on Trump’s target list include Chicago, Albuquerque, Cleveland and Detroit. In Milwaukee, Mayor Tom Barrett accused Trump is looking for ways to create political division. Federal agents won’t be welcome, Barrett said. The state’s attorney general, Josh Kaul, said Trump was employing “fascist tactics.” Kaul promised legal action if Trump agents interfere with peaceful protests.
