MADISON, Wis. – Governor Tony Evers signed a bill into law banning police chokeholds. An exception is a life−threatening situation or self−defense. The law is among police reform measures moving through the state Legislature, some of which have failed in the process, others not. The chokehold bill cleared the Republican-controlled Senate on a voice vote two weeks ago despite objections from Democrats that there should be no exceptions. The Assembly accepted the bill last week.
