$16.8 million to design, install, operates system

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota House environment committee is examining funding to stanch the upriver invasion of dreaded silver carp at Minnesota City if not first at Fountain City. Two similar bills, one co-sponsored by Gene Pelowski, a Winona Democrat, would fund University of Minnesota researchers to study state-of-the-art possibilities.to impede the carp. One $16.8 million would cover installation and operation of a deterrent system at the pair of Lock and Dam 5s. These dams span the river between Winona and Fountain City and between Minnesota City and Buffalo City. This spring the carp were found for the first time in Pool 6, which the backed-up Mississippi River behind Lock and Dam 6 at Trempealeau.
