ST. PAUL, Minn. – The head of the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy faulted a state agency for issuing permits for PolyMet to mine copper in the Arrowhead region. Kathryn Hoffman was responding to an appellate court order to the Minnesota Environmental Protection Agency this week to review its approval of the proposed mind. “The process that granted permits for the PolyMet mine proposal is broken,” said Hoffman. “It’s clear that the permits that were issued to PolyMet did not protect human health and the environment, and it’s time for our agencies to acknowledge and address that.” She noted that the court also had earlier rejected a permit from another state agency, the Department of Natural Resources, for the mine.
