ALMA, Wis. – For the first time since 1994, the Army Corps of Engineers will dewater its Lock No. 4 on Monday for thorough maintenance. Once the lock is drained, crews will repair the miter gates, the bubbler system, and damaged concrete. The project is scheduled to be completed March 14 in time for the 2021 Mississippi River shipping season. The project includes sandblasting, painting, welding, and carpentry. Sill beams, bulkheads and miter gates will be replaced or repaired.

Lock 4, built in 1935, moves more than than 12.6 million tons of cargo and 4,300 recreational craft through the dock annually. Vessels are raised or lowered nine feet.
