A Mayo rural health investment. Minnesota health giant sees two years for construction, then a grand opening. Next door to the current Sparta hospital at 310 West Main Steet

Groundbreaking a celebratory hard hat event

SPARTA, Wis. — The ceremonial ground-breaking for the new 25-bed Mayo hospital in Sparta brought Mayo leadership from Rochester and LaCrosse to town. Mayo’s president, Prathibha Varkey, said the hospital will offer advanced technology and integrated systems near to home for rural people. Sparta, population 10,000 is 30 miles from larger Mayo facilities in LaCrosse and 95 miles from Rochester in Minnesota. The hospital, due to be operational in 2027, will have a a dedicated anesthesia room, two operating rooms, and pre-operative and recovery rooms. The western Wisconsin investment comes while Mayo has closed and trimmed rural services in southern Minnesota. Mayo has declined to release what it has budgeted for construction. At the groundbreaking Sparta Mayor Kevin Riley was enthusiastic that the new hospital will be around a long time, perhaps as long as the current hospital, which dates to 1883.

Facing demotion. Opened in 1883 by the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration. Later absorbed by the Skemp Clinic in LaCrosse, which itself was purchased by Mayo in 1995.
