A great-great grandson of Wisconsin abolitionist Hans Christian Heg asked Wisc0nsin Gov. Tony Evers to restore a statue honoring Heg. Racially motivated rioters, apparently not realizing that Heg was a crusader against Black subjugation, toppled the statue on the State Capitol grounds June 23 and threw it in the lake. Heg’s descendant, James Heg, called the acts senseless. His ancestor, who died as a Union officer in 1863, wasn’t tainted by any of the historical evils that prompted the rioting, Heg said.
