LEWISTON, Minn. – The Fools Five, a rite of spring for runners, has been moved to fall because Co-Vid remains a problem, organizers said. The related auction also is being moved. A new date, probably in September, will be announced later. Large in-person gatherings are integral to the event, organizers said in a statement: “Our events are not conducive to virtual, because our Fools Five community needs the in-person interaction of hope, compassion, and support, as well as a friendly bidding competition.”

Lewiston’s Fools Five is billed as Minnesota’s Oldest Road Race. The race raises money for cancer research. Among noted runners have been Dick Beardsley, Frank Shorter and Alberto Salazar. Organizers Dan Goss and Judy Hovelson says the race has raised $2.3 million. Recipients have included the Gundersen Medical Foundation; Eagles Cancer Telethon, which donates to Mayo Clinic; and the Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota.
