NEWTON, Iowa – The winter storm that swept through the Upper Midwest caused a 40-vehicle pileup on Interstate 80 about 35 miles east of Des Moines on the way to Iowa City. Serious injuries were reported but no deaths. Eastbound lanes were closed into the evening.
