ST. PAUL, Minn. – After a statistical analysis of speeding tickets, the State Patrol saw it a crisis on its hands. The Patrol has launched a speed enforcement campaign and asked local police agencies to participate. The Patrol said that speeders can expect to be stopped and fined, with stiffer penalties including suspension of license for faster than 100 mph. How serious is the crisis? The Patrol found that speed was the primary factor in 397 traffic deaths on Minnesota roads in 2020 – up from 364 from the year before and the worst since 2008.

> Troopers wrote 1,068 citations for traveling more than 100 mph in 2020, double the year before.
> The top speed was 153 mph.
> In the first eight days of 2021, the Patrol cited 1,902 drivers for speeding, 23 for 100-plus mph.
