WASHINGTON – At a Senate hearing Trump apologist Senator Ron Johnson, R-Wisconsin, read a fanciful and discredited account of the January 6 raid on the U.S. Capitol. The account, which originated with right-wing blogger J. Michael Waller, asserted that there was no insurrection, that it was a joyful crowd to which grandparents and parents brought their kids, and that excesses were by leftists masquerading as Trump supporters. Johnson departed the hearing immediately after making the statement. The fallout from aghast disbelieving Capitol police and others at the hearing came swiftly. The hearing chair, Senator Amy Klobuchar, D-Minnesota, used Johnson’s own words to discredit what he had said: “As our hearing concludes, I want to make one thing clear: ‘provocateurs’ did not storm the Capitol. They were not ‘fake Trump protestors.’ The mood on January 6th was not ‘festive.’ That is disinformation.” Others called Johnson delusional.
