TAYLOR, Wis. – A man sought for a probation violation shot at a deputy sheriff and held hostages before vanishing after 15 hours with a SWAT team outside. An all-points bulletin was issued for Gary G. Hughes, 74. He was described as armed and dangerous: Don’t approach or attempt to apprehend him. The confrontation began about 11:15 p.m. Thursday, when a Jackson County deputy went to 15824 West Kelly Road just east of Taylor to locate Hughes. The deputy quoted Hughes that he was not going back to jail and then brandished a firearm and fired at the deputy. The deputy got out of the house safely and called for backup. Among responding units was an Eau Claire SWAT team. During 15 hours of negotiation and standoff, other occupants of the house were evacuated without injury. When police ultimately entered the place, Hughes was no longer there.
