MINNEAPOLIS – Paramedic Derek Smith testified at the Derek Chauvin murder trial that he checked for a pulse on George Floyd when he arrived on the scene and couldn’t find one. Smith was part of ambulance crew dispatched to 38th and Chicago, where Floyd was being restrained by Chauvin the evening of May 25. Smith said he administered an electric shock to Floyd in the ambulance to try to restart his heart. “As a human being, I was trying to give him a second chance at life,” he said. Asked to explain, Smith said: “In layman’s terms, I thought he was dead.”
