WINONA Minn. – In a recent candidate forum, mayoral candidate Michelle Alexander demonstrated her understanding of community dynamics that can allay negative effects of the coronavirus pandemic on local business. Alexander, a City Councilmember since 2010, noted that the city has opened up small business loans. Also, she said, the city has relaxed restrictions for businesses to expand into the streets to serve customers and maintain cash flows.  Another candidate, Tim Sherman, took a broad view. He noted that the city’s tax base has been grown through downtown development, which, combined with a balanced city budget, he said will help assure growth on the backside of the pandemic. Jovy Rockey and Ted Hazelton pointed to the role of Winona Health in dealing wih the pandemic. All candidates praised a can-do community apirit. Rockey cited Winona Volunteer Services and other organizations that focus on Winona’s most vulnerable citizens.

Question posed by League of Women Voters at candidate forum: Considering the current pandemic and its significant social and economic effects on our community, what advantages do you think Winona has to ensure people’s health and safety? What needs to be a priority in the actions of our city’s elected leaders?
