MINNEAPOLIS – The judge in the Derek Chauvin case ruled that aggravating factors were involved in the death of George Floyd, which could mean a longer sentence for Chauvin. Judge Peter Cahill found that Chauvin abused his authority as a police officer when he restrained Floyd last year and did so with particular cruelty. Chauvin is is scheduled to be sentenced June 25. Sentencing guidelines suggest 12-1/2 years for his second-degree murder conviction but aggravating factors could mean as many as 30.
