ALBERT LEA, Minn. – The hydrochloric acid that leaked from a Union Pacific derailment Saturday came from three tank cars. Emergency workers said one 40,000-gallon tank ruptured and lost all its cargo. Two other tank cars were about half-drained. The railroad has attempted to neutralize the escaped acid and channeled as much as possible into storage tanks that were moved to the site. Three tank cars carrying liquid propane gas also derailed but did not leak. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, meanwhile, was focusing in contaminated soil and the Goose Lake wetlands.
