ALBERT LEA, Minn. – By dawn a Union Pacific crew working through the night with cranes and heavy equipment had removed eight mangled freight cars from a derailment at Goose Lake on the edge of Albert Lea. Another 20 derailed cars remained. The route itself, linking the Great Lakes with the railroad hub at Omaha, Nebraska, remained closed. Towed away earlier were the locomotives and about 20 cars that remained upright on the rails as the derailment was occurring. What caused the wreck? The railroad said it was still investigating. There were no injuries

The Union Pacific operates daily freight trains to Winona from LaCrosse through trackage rights over the Canadian Pacific. The trains dead-end in Winona and turn around. None of the trains on the UP’s Superior-Omaha Spine Line through Albert Lea pass through Winona.
