WINONA, Minn. – More than 100 old mattresses, mostly sagging and all bumpy, were donated to a save-the-landfill project organized by Winona State University students. Chemistry prof Jeanne Franz, faculty adviser, said the mattresses will go to 7 Rivers Recycling in Onalaska to be made into new products like foam backing on carpets and landscape fabric. The mattresses, as well as bed springs, filled a Southeast Tech semi-trailer. Franz said the university’s Environmental Club and an environmental class wanted to divert mattresses from landfills. The project helped students learn about the circular nature of the economy while helping the environment, Franz said. To Franz’ knowledge, the project was the first of its kind in Winona.
