ROCHESTER, Minn. – An internist who spent 11 years practicing medicine at at Mayo Clinic, Prathibha Varkey, will return as president for 17 hospitals and nearly 50 community clinics in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. In announcing the appointment, Mayo said that Varkey will work with Mary Jo Williamson, chief administrative officer, on strategy and operations. Varkey succeeds Bobbie Gostout, who retired in December.

Since 2016 Varkey has been a chief executive with the Yale New Haven Health in Connecticut. Before that she was chief executive with Seton Clinical Enterprise in Austin, Texas. Before that, until 2013, shr was at Mayo. Her medical degree is from Christian Medical College in India. She also has a degree in public health.
